WILMINGTON, N.C. (November 18, 2014) – Pharmaceutical Product Development, LLC (PPD) today announced that Randy Anderson, Ph.D., vice president of global product development and therapeutic area leader for metabolics, was named a 2014 Health Care Hero. The annual awards honor members of the greater Wilmington medical community for their engagement on critical health issues.
Anderson was recognized for his efforts at PPD to find innovative therapies for diabetes and his ongoing leadership role, both locally and internationally, with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Diagnosed at age 6, Anderson has lived with Type 1 diabetes for more than 50 years. At PPD, he works closely with colleagues, JDRF scientists and investigators to optimize clinical trial designs that help speed research for innovative, safe and effective treatments.
“Living with diabetes, I am grateful to PPD colleagues who share my commitment to finding new medicines to better treat the disease,” Anderson said. “Defining development strategies for new therapies is a great privilege and responsibility. On a local level, raising awareness and support through the JDRF’s major annual fundraisers – the Walk to Cure Diabetes and the Hope Gala – allow me to give back to the community in a meaningful way.”
In 1999, Anderson became involved with the JDRF after his son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He has volunteered many hours in support of the organization, including local fundraising and nationally serving on its medical sciences review committee, where he has provided scientific reviews for more than 70 grant proposals and special initiatives submitted to JDRF for funding. Recently, Anderson was elected to the JDRF international board of directors, where he serves on its research and advocacy committees.
The annual Health Care Heroes is an awards program and event organized by the Greater Wilmington Business Journal. Anderson accepted the community achievement award during a Nov. 15 ceremony in Wilmington.
