Global Perspective

Siyu Wang gains insight into global company culture through her clinical management internship.

Siyu Wang Careers

Since opening in 2007, PPD’s offices in China now include 20 different departments. The combined Beijing and Shanghai offices are now seven times the size they were two years ago. In 2018, the clinical management team is expected to grow by three times its current size. This growth has offered numerous internship opportunities for local university students to gain experience working with a U.S.-based, leading global contract research organization (CRO).

Siyu Wang was part of our 2018 internship program. Siyu shares her reflections on her time as an intern within our clinical management department in our Beijing office.

At the beginning of my final year as an undergraduate in pharmaceutical engineering at Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, I searched for internships. I was fortunate to find PPD’s program and was offered an internship. I was excited to join PPD, and knew I could learn a lot from the company’s training program and from senior colleagues, which are both invaluable to new graduates.

I joined the clinical management department as a project assistant intern with opportunities to work on various tasks contributing to the clinical trial process. My responsibilities included study file maintenance, investigating discrepancies and gaps in data, and completing safety reports. A clinical research assistant (CRA) also took me along for a site visit! To be a CRA, you need to be fully prepared for your site visits and ready to answer any questions from the principal investigator or client. These tasks gave me good general knowledge of clinical trials, International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use, and Good Clinical Practice guidelines.

My colleagues were helpful and patient with questions I had, which gave me insight into the culture and of a global company. The atmosphere at PPD is relaxed and everyone helps each other. The bosses are kind and friendly, treating colleagues as equals. Everyone at PPD has a strong sense of responsibility, high-work efficiency and strong time management.

I enjoyed my internship so much that I have strongly recommended PPD to my classmates and peers. It’s really a warm family and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work as an intern with this CRO. Once I finished my internship, I had the opportunity to apply for a position as a CRA I and have joined PPD as a full-time employee. I look forward to continuing my career with PPD!
