Clinical Trial Volunteers

Study Volunteers/Patients

PPD conducts medically supervised studies to help evaluate new medications. There are two types of studies; each requires different kinds of individuals:

  • Early phase drug studies, which involve only healthy individuals
  • Clinical research studies (also known as clinical trials), which enroll volunteers with specific medical conditions

Study volunteers have the satisfaction of helping find new treatments, cures and preventions for disease. Eligible volunteers receive a medical exam and a screening test to determine if they qualify for a specific study. Selected study participants may receive financial compensation for their time.

Healthy Volunteers

PPD’s Phase I Clinic in Austin, Texas, conducts studies to determine how new medicines act in the bodies of healthy volunteers, specifically how the compound is absorbed, distributed, metabolized and excreted. This is not testing to determine if the medicine works.

Our Dental Research Clinic in Austin, Texas, conducts medically supervised studies to evaluate new drugs for dental pain relief, specifically wisdom teeth extraction.

Volunteers with Specific Medical Conditions (Clinical Trial Volunteers)

PPD also conducts clinical trials around the world that involve volunteers participating in the testing of new drugs or delivery methods to determine safety and effectiveness. These trials primarily require individuals with specific medical conditions (such as diabetes). However, some trials – for example, vaccine trials – require healthy individuals. Clinical trials are carefully conducted by doctors and scientists, and are regulated by government agencies.
