March 2010 The opening of a contract research facility in Athlone, Ireland, which includes an 18,000-square-foot analytical testing lab and clinical supplies business, expands PPD’s global scientific expertise, lab capacity and supplies network to meet growing client demand in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
March 2010 PPD and the Southern Research Institute form a collaborative agreement for research and development (R&D) on pandemic and seasonal influenza vaccines to provide clients a full spectrum of influenza vaccine development services. The collaboration enhances PPD’s position as the first contract research organization (CRO) to offer a comprehensive menu of vaccine assay development and testing services to support vaccine clinical trials with faster, more cost-efficient laboratory solutions.
March 2010 The company launches the PPD Vaccines & Biologics Center of Excellence, a first-in-kind comprehensive network of integrated, world-class lab services focused specifically on vaccine and biologic drug development. The integration of vaccine testing, bioanalytical, cGMP and global central lab services offers biopharmaceutical companies the opportunity to streamline and customize lab services for their biologics portfolios.
May 2010 PPD expands its drug safety, medical information and medical writing services into Sofia, Bulgaria, by establishing a new pharmacovigilance and medical communications center, strengthening the company’s ability to meet growing client demand for these services in an efficient, cost-effective and regulatory-compliant manner.
June 2010 The 2010 CenterWatch European Site Survey rates PPD one of Europe’s top CROs, with more than 78 percent of survey participants rating PPD’s overall relationship quality as “excellent” or “good.”
June 2010 PPD successfully completes the spin-off its compound partnering division. The newly developed company, Furiex Pharmaceuticals, begins operating as an independent company and advances PPD’s former compound partnering business. PPD continues to operate as a leading global CRO.
June 2010 The Vaccine Industry Excellence Awards recognize PPD as Best Contract Research Organization in Asia in 2010. The award cites PPD’s quality of services provided in Asia and its long-standing client partnerships in the vaccine industry.
July 2010 Celebrating 25 years of operation, PPD executives ring the Nasdaq Stock Market Opening Bell. The ceremony marks the company’s solid foundation in delivering quality service, scientific expertise and innovative technologies to help clients deliver safe, effective medicines to patients.
July 2010 PPD and Lovelace Biomedical and Environmental Research Institute begin collaborating in the areas of laboratory, preclinical and clinical development services. The companies are jointly bidding on select new research projects and providing biopharmaceutical and government clients services across a range of therapeutic areas.
July 2010 PPD and Microsoft announce they will jointly implement an innovative technology solution designed to improve efficiency in managing U.S. Food and Drug Administration-mandated Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) programs. This first-of-its-kind technology solution will provide biopharmaceutical companies a long-term system for managing operational components of REMS programs while tracking large amounts of information collected from multiple sources, including the patient, healthcare provider and pharmacy.
July 2010 The expansion of its cGMP laboratory testing services in Wayne, Pa., enables PPD to continue to meet growing client demand. The 5,000-square-foot facility provides small and large molecule testing for a full range of product development programs, including vaccines and biologics, and is in close proximity to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies located in the northeastern United States.
September 2010 PPD establishes preferred provider relationships across North America for conducting Phase I trials in patients across a broad range of therapeutic areas. The sites include Commonwealth Biomedical Research, CNS Network and Lovelace Scientific Resources, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lovelace Respiratory Research.
September 2010 InformationWeek 500 names PPD to its annual list of the nation’s most innovative users of business technology. The InformationWeek 500 award recognizes PPD’s strong information technology strategies, practices and investments, which are important areas for ensuring successful clinical research and development programs.
September 2010 PPD opens an office in Novosibirsk, Russia, strengthening its presence in Eastern Europe. The expansion extends PPD’s footprint in Russia, where it already has offices in Moscow, Smolensk and St. Petersburg.
October 2010 Continuing its expansion in Southeast Asia, PPD opens an office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The company also has offices in the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
October 2010 By consolidating its clinical development operations into a new facility in Beijing, China, PPD enhances its ability to deliver a full range of clinical research and development services in this important country. The new office unites PPD employees with the 300 Excel PharmaStudies employees gained through the 2009 acquisition of Excel and further establishes PPD’s presence as one of the country’s largest CROs.
October 2010 PPD earns the 2010 Site Solutions Summit Eagle Award. An independent study of more than 300 experienced investigative sites identified PPD as the most desirable CRO with which to partner.
October 2010 An agreement with the Himalayan Institute and Hospital Trust in northern India expands PPD’s network of highly qualified investigators in a region that has become increasingly important for conducting global clinical trials. The network increases PPD’s already large presence in India where it has offices in Mumbai, Bangalore and New Delhi.
October 2010 PPD and VirtualScopics form a strategic alliance to deliver comprehensive clinical and medical imaging services. The alliance enhances PPD’s ability to provide clients full service, integrated solutions through an innovative, patented algorithm-based approach to image processing and biomarker measurement.
October 2010 PPD and Bend Research initiate a collaboration in the areas of formulation development, analytical testing and clinical supplies manufacturing. The collaboration strengthens PPD’s ability to provide clients full-service chemistry, manufacturing and controls product development solutions.
January 2011 PPD and Taijitu Biologics Limited establish a joint venture in the area of the discovery of novel biotherapeutics. The joint venture, named BioDuro Biologics, expands PPD’s ability to deliver unique, highly differentiated drug discovery services for biopharmaceutical companies across the globe.
February 2011 Elan and PPD form a global business collaboration focused on the advancement, progression and execution of Elan’s development portfolio. The primary objective of this relationship is to deploy both companies’ skills and expertise in a flexible, integrated manner to drive the execution of Elan’s clinical programs in a parallel and expedited basis and on a global scale.
March 2011 PPD launches PPD® PatientView, a secure online technology that empowers clinical trial participants to view, share and electronically archive medical information related to their illness. This increased connectivity enables them to play a more active role in managing their health and actively engages them throughout the duration of a clinical trial. The portal links clinical trial participants with biopharmaceutical companies, physicians and health care resources to enhance patient connectivity and improve retention in clinical trials.
March 2011 PPD introduces its new Clinical Trials Mobile application for use on Apple® iPad and Apple® iPhone devices to help potential clinical research participants and investigators find clinical trials across a wide range of therapeutic areas.
March 2011 ProtonMedia and PPD enter into an agreement to jointly develop a new virtual training solution that will improve the cost effectiveness, speed and quality of clinical trial training for life sciences organizations.
May 2011 PPD earns the number one spot among contract research organizations in the 2011 CenterWatch global site survey, with 84.3 percent of participants rating PPD’s overall relationship quality as "excellent" or "good."
May 2011 PPD establishes four practice areas through PPD® Consulting—biosimilars, adaptive trial design, China regulatory strategy and cardiovascular outcomes studies—strengthening the company’s ability to help clients meet unique product development challenges across multiple disciplines.

May 2011 The U.S. government awards PPD the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity: Regulatory Affairs & Compliance Support contract to provide global regulatory and biostatistical services for a range of clinical development programs funded by the U.S. Army.
June 2011 Microsoft Corp. names PPD and ProtonMedia winners of a Microsoft 2011 Life Sciences Innovation Award, recognizing their innovative use of ProtonMedia’s ProtoSphere in creating PPD® 3D.
